Role Overview
Internship Overview
ALATYR is seeking a senior, hands-on Robotics Engineer to build the first generation of robotic capabilities for in-orbit infrastructure assembly. This is a rare opportunity to work on what will become the first autonomous robotic systems capable of assembling complex infrastructures in space. You will operate at the intersection of robotics, space systems, and advanced automation, turning ambitious concepts into real, working systems.
We are looking for a highly autonomous engineer with strong execution capacity, comfortable navigating uncertainty and building from first principles. You will contribute to the design, development, and validation of robotic systems as part of a growing team of robotics engineers at an early stage of development.
Key Responsibilities
Key Learning Experiences
End-to-End Robotic System Development
• Define and implement the architecture of a multi-arm robotic system for autonomous assembly
• Translate high-level operational needs into concrete technical solutions.
• Select and integrate key hardware components (arms, end-effectors, sensors).
• Assemble, test, and iterate on the system with a strong focus on speed and functionality.
Software and Control
• Develop core robotics software components (control, motion, interaction logic).
• Structure a minimal but robust software stack enabling rapid iteration.
• Implement practical solutions for manipulation in uncertain or partially constrained environments.
Simulation and Testing
• Set up a simulation environment to accelerate development and de-risk robotic operations in representative environments.
• Define and execute test campaigns across representative robotic environments.
• Continuously bridge simulation and real-world performance.
Cross-Functional Work
• Work closely with space system engineers
• Contribute to system-level trade-offs and interface definitions.
• Operate effectively in a multidisciplinary, evolving environment.
Qualifications
Experience
• Significant experience in robotics (typically 5–10+ years).
• Proven track record of building robotic systems, not only designing or simulating them.
• Experience in environments where robots must adapt to variability or uncertainty (e.g., field robotics, medical robotics, inspection, defense, extreme environments).
Mindset
• Strong focus on execution and ability to deliver in fast-paced environments.
• High level of autonomy: able to move forward with limited structure.
• Pragmatic and solution-oriented approach.
• Curiosity and openness to cross-disciplinary topics.
• Willingness to challenge assumptions and propose unconventional solutions.
• Systems thinking
Skills
• Solid background in planning, control loops, perception algorithms, sensor fusion, kinematics, and manipulation.
• Experience with robotic arms and real-world deployment constraints.
• Familiarity with simulation tools (e.g., Gazebo, Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, or equivalent) & associated programming language (C++, Python) and ROS framework.
• Ability to develop working solutions quickly, even if imperfect at first iteration.
